The method for diagnosing a pinworm infection is the tape test. This test is specifically designed to identify Enterobius vermicularis (pinworms) by detecting their eggs. It involves using clear tape to collect a sample from the perianal area, ideally performed first thing in the morning before the child bathes or uses the toilet. The tape is then placed on a glass slide and examined under a microscope for the presence of pinworm eggs.

Stool samples, blood tests, and urine tests are not effective for diagnosing pinworm infections. Pinworms reside in the intestines and lay their eggs around the anal area, which is why the tape test is much more effective. A stool sample would generally not contain pinworm eggs in a detectable amount, and blood tests or urine tests do not specifically target eggs or the presence of the worms themselves. Therefore, the tape test is the preferred and correct method for diagnosing this particular type of infection.
